Russell Brand often talks of “being at one with God and the universe” in a very expressive way - I think there is much truth in a lot of what he thinks.
He does talk of desire and giving to our desires as a way of connecting to this divine - or that we are all divine and in union with one another are able to find that connectedness.
A big part of this is an interesting perspective on sexuality. That it is our sexuality expressed that draws us into this one-ness. I think there is much truth in this although I do not believe that “sexuality expressed” is synonymous with “satisfying our desires”.
Sexuality truly expressed is about being at peace with ourselves and others around us - and at peace with the divine. In this place we are able to love freely and truly. Desires are part of our humanness and can be formed and met in a way that is not self-seeking but is about giving. For me there is a challenge to not being slave to desire yet being fully expressive. I expect most people would admit that satisfying desires is not the most important road in finding “peace”.
Aldous Huxley had something to say about trying to find that divine union outside of God:
“We live together, we act on, and react to, one another; but always and in all circumstances we are by ourselves… Embraced, the lovers desperately try to fuse their insulated ecstasies into a single self-transcendence; in vain… From family to nation, every human group is a society of island universes.”
Everywhere that love is expressed, God can be found BUT true love can only be found in the God, in the divine - slight difference, it’s not that we find the divine in love (although we can) but we find love in the divine. And like RB I think that true love expressed is this union with the divine.
I think that Russell and I are nearly on the same wavelength (I am a big fan) but the difference made in the belief in divine that is a person is huge and changes everything.
